An Eames RAR Plastic Upholstered Rocking Chair by Herman Miller

Characteristics

This particular example is in striking racing green upholstery with a white fibreglass base. It was made by Summits Plastics as denoted by their embossed ‘S’ stamp in a circle on the seat base. In 1953 Herman Miller outsourced the production to various external manufacturers as is the case with this item. With the raised Herman Miller logo on the seat base.

A small, superficial crack in the fibreglass at the front edge of the chair. Some other minor wear and scuffing to the fibreglass and upholstery. Otherwise in very good condition.

Technical Information

Date: Mid 20th century
Height: 69 cm
Width: 64 cm
Depth: 71 cm

Sustainability

The average piece of furniture generates approximately 47kg of carbon dioxide equivalents – roughly the same as burning 5.3 gallons of petrol. Buying this item second-hand versus a newly made equivalent recovers the energy used to make it, rather than generating further emissions and using new materials.
